How can Hong Kong become a financial centre truly rivalling New York or London ? Can Hong Kong strengthen its competitiveness by boosting market regulation ? How will integration with China's financial markets help or hinder Hong Kong's position ? Professor K.C. Chan, Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury, will join us to discuss these questions and other challenges facing Hong Kong's economy over the next decade.
Formerly the Dean of Business and Management of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Professor Chan assumed the post of Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury in 2007. Previously, he held a number of public service positions including Chairman of the Consumer Council and director of the Hong Kong Futures Exchange. He has served on the Commission on Strategic Development, the Commission on Poverty, the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee, the Hang Seng Index Advisory Committee and the Hong Kong Council for Academic Accreditation. Professor Chan is also former President of the Asian Finance Association and the Association of Asia Pacific Business Schools.
Before he joined HKUST in 1993, Professor Chan spent nine years teaching at Ohio State University. Having earned an MBA and Phd in finance from the University of Chicago, his academic research focused on asset pricing, evaluation of trading strategies and market efficiency.
